Nutritional Labels

Nutrition labels are mandatory on all pre-packaged foods.

There are required font and label size to make them consisted and easy to read.

All the information on food labels must be true and not misleading and must follow the following guide lines: Easily to read, clearly and prominently displayed (with a recommended minimum type height of 1.6 mm (1/16 inch), based on the lowercase letter "o", unless otherwise specified); and On any panel except the bottom,* except for the information required to appear on the principal display panel.

Just as important is that your nutritional label stickers to your product. If your product is frozen you may need a freezer label. And some preprinted cartons have varnish that is not very adhesive friendly.

Regulations On Some Food Claims
  • Nutrition Facts table: Are mandatory on prepackaged foods with some exceptions. The Nutrition Facts table has a consistent format and provides information on calories and 13 nutrients: fat, saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, fibre, sugars, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron.
  • Nutrient content claims: The regulations update, the past requirements for nutrient content claims (e.g., low in saturated fat, low sodium) based on current science and also introduce new claims (e.g., free of trans fats).
  • Diet-related health claims: The regulations permit four claims for foods that are suitable for diets and aslo reduce risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, some types of cancer, and osteoporosis.
