Sustainability

Why just Digital? An Eco Friendly Option!

Making the environment our number one priority is the right thing to do.  It’s also a lot more fun!  Digital technology’s computer platforms and toner have replaced the need for messy inks and solvents for a cleaner, healthier, and more enjoyable work environment.

Recruiting young talent is one of the biggest challenges for printing companies.  They realize that harsh manufacturing processes have a negative impact on the environment and don’t want any part of it.  At Premier Markings, we don’t have this problem.

We are all committed to environmentally sustainable manufacturing practices and we want to share our vision with you.  Digital print is the responsible future of label and packaging manufacturing and Premier Markings is leading the way.

Less is More

With digital print, the design goes right from the computer to the press, we don’t require printing plates.  This adds up to conservation of resources; electricity, water, and fossil-based products and allows us to use up to 95% less paper to get the job running.  With no plates, there’s nothing to wash up, no water or chemicals need to be used for clean-up.  Finally, there’s no plates or additional paper waste to go into landfill after the job is done.

This is not only better for the environment, it’s also better for your budget.  The savings in consumables in the manufacturing process adds to your bottom line.

Sustainable Options

FSC Papers

We work with suppliers that are certified by The Forest Stewardship Council.  Their mission:

FSC works to help forests protect animal habitat, indigenous peoples’ rights, worker’s rights, and areas of significant environmental or cultural importance.

They do this by setting standards for responsible forest management which are then used to evaluate forests to their strict environmental and social standards. The fibre from certified forests is tracked all the way to the store through the FSC Chain of Custody system. FSC-certified wood, paper and other forest products are then sold with the FSC label by certified companies in the marketplace.

FSC papers are available in semi-gloss and Estate stocks.

Recycled Content

Now available are paper and film materials made with recycled content.  Standard 54# Semi-gloss is made with the recycled paper liner that’s left after the labels have been applied. The film materials are made with recycled post-consumer plastic.

Wash Away for Reuse and Recycle Programs

For containers that will be reused there are materials with wash off adhesive, allowing for clean and easy removal.  Perfect for returnable and recyclable glass bottles, IFCO totes, kegs and metal crates.

Most single use consumer plastics are polyethylene terephthalate (PET), it’s the most commonly used plastic in the world.  Having the labels wash off easily allows more of the plastic to be recycled into new products instead of ending up in the trash.

Another Step Forward

Next Step papers employ a smarter approach in sourcing our natural resources.  They use less raw materials, water and energy and creates less waste during it’s life cycle compared to the standard made product.  The methodology includes reduction in carbon emissions as well as the preserved forests’ ability to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

These figures are verified by the Carbon Trust and are calculated for raw material sourcing including transportation and manufacturing.

Replace standard 54# paper / 40# Kraft liner with Next Step FSC paper / 2.1 mil Kraft liner and save:

8% energy / 8% clean water / 7% less CO2 emissions

Replace it with Next Step FSC paper / 1.2 mil PET liner and save:

33% energy / 13% clean water / 19% less CO2 emissions
